EqD Artist Training Grounds II -- Day 11

Description

I’m still spittin’ these out. I have about twenty more days left of this event, my internet is still being glitchy occasionally, and school starts again in two weeks. I’ll see if I can keep it up. I didn’t draw an entry for yesterday’s theme because I was too busy :/

This is my entry for day eleven of Equestria Daily’s Artist Training Grounds II art event/contest. The theme today was “a pony fixing something/a pony on the mend”. Here, Annabelle, wearing her tweed cap that I keep forgetting to draw her with, has broken her giant pencil (somehow) and her cousin Martin Springer is fixing it in his (under-furnished) workshop. Being the kaigunelly of handicrafts and 3D artwork, Martin’s good with his hands, making sculptures, whittling, and stuff like that.

For those who are curious, Annabelle’s giant pencil was last seen in my entry for day two (link below). Also, Martin does not have wings, or he doesn’t often exhibit his wings rather, being a little too big and heavy to fly well XD (see Annabelle's reference sheet below). He’s supposed to resemble Big Macintosh [link] in terms of his size and girth.
Like Annabelle’s sister Carol (see day 5’s entry; link below), I’m working on a reference sheet for Martin as well as several other kaigunelly side characters. Chances are, though, at this rate, I'll wind up introducing them all here in their ponified forms before I ever finish them

I like sketching, but I’m not a very sketchy person…if that makes sense. I don’t like being loose and messy with my drawings, making my linework neat and smooth. This makes my sketching slower than I would like. I also think I went a little heavy on the value difference in places for this one, so I’m not entirely happy with how this turned out :/ I left the background lighter than Martin and Annabelle so as to have them be more easily distinguishable, and this isn’t meant to be a very serious sketch. This and the perspective being a off a bit (Annabelle kinda looks like she's floating several inches off the floor) makes it look kinda strange. I think I won’t be so widely varied with the value next time, and try to be a little looser with my drawing :hmm:
