Background Ponies #1

Description

I meant to get this done a day or two after “Rarity Takes Manehattan” aired, but that didn’t happen. I wanted to make some (more or less) lineless art of some of my favorite minor-characters from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It was supposed to be a quick and fun, however it became a lot more involved than expected, but it was still fun anyway =)

One thing I’ve always appreciated about MLP:FIM is the little details that make the world that it takes place in feel so much more believable, in this case the background and minor characters. There’s always someone doing something in the background that adds to the ambiance, and minor or one-shot characters are given more personality than most other shows would give, I think. The production team and developers constantly go the extra mile to make the show enjoyable and a unique experience. Whether you like an episode or not, I bet there’s always something in it that will make you smile or will impress you in some way.

That said, here are three of my favorite minor characters: Prim Hemline mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Prim_Hemlin… , Ms. Harshwhinny mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Harshwhinny , and Coco Pommel mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Coco_Pommel. I would have drawn Suri Polomare too mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Suri_Poloma… , but I wanted to get this done…and she’s kind of a jerk. Most of them are from “Rarity Takes Manehattan” since it’s my favorite episode of season 4 so far and I wanted to draw something fan art-ish for it.

Prim Hemline and Ms. Harshwhinny are among my favorites more for aesthetic reasons than because of their personalities or roles. Since season 2, MLP:FIM has steadily been creating more and more background ponies to use for crowd-shots, among other things. It’s always refreshing to see a pony with a unique design, and these two are no exception with their similarly long-snouted faces and taller body types. Their serious nature and desire for formality give me the impression that they could be good friends, and I swear they’re voiced by the same actress which doesn’t hurt either.

Coco Pommel (and Suri Polomare if I had drawn her) is the opposite as I like her for her personality and the role she played in the episode but her design is nice too. Like Fluttershy, Coco’s soft-spoken and kind, only going along with Suri stealing Rarity’s fabric and designs because Suri’s her boss. She really got a lot of screen-time and actually played a key part in the episode’s events when she could have easily been left as just Suri’s nameless assistant. But she recognized Suri’s meanness and did the right thing, which was also nice.

This was fun and I might do some more of these in the future with some of my other favorite minor characters, but for now I’ve got things to do!

I'm pretty sure both Prim and Harshwhinny could be really good friends.
