Animals of Earth Illustrations - Chapbook

Here are just some illustrations I did for a chapbook [link] of short stories as the final project in my digital printing class last semester.
Basically, we were assigned a creative writing student and had to design a layout and include at least 3 images and a front cover for their chapbook, with the student directing us on how he wanted everything done. Thankfully, I got to work with a student whose stories were very animal-based and anthropomorphic in theme so I had some fun drawing these illustrations (for which I used a lot of references). Though I’m not much of a layout designer and mine wasn’t the best in the class by far, but I got a pretty good grade on it so I’m happy for that too.

The stories in the chapbook aren’t mine, and some of them are rather strange/graphic, so I’m not sharing them here, only my illustrations and the front cover. For the illustrations, I wanted a more traditional feel for this book so I went with pen and ink sketches similar to those in the Redwall or Stuart Little books. However, I wanted the front and back covers to be a little more serious so I tried to create a proper photographic illustration. Scott Scholl (the creative writing student) wanted people going into one side of a hill and animals coming out the other. I did what I could with my limited Photoshop skills. I’m not as happy with the cover as I am with the other illustrations because of this, and that I was only allowed to use non-copyrighted images from certain websites, severely limiting my choice of good-quality photographs to use for this project

My favorite is the one of the fox-headed women. I think it turned out really well. That or the rabid raccoon
